JR Invite FinalToday is a special day as we celebrate my friend, Jessica, who authors the food blog, My Baking Heart.  She's getting MARRIED this month!  I'm so excited for her!  We got to meet in real life almost a year ago at the Foodbuzz Festival.  She and her mom (the Paula Deen look-alike) were so much fun to be around.  I found myself wanting to find them if I was looking for some company that weekend.  🙂  Jessica is one of the sweetest gals I've met, and I can't wait to see her again sometime!  And, that's totally going to happen now that we live only 6 hours from each other, right Jess!? 😉Fried Cinnamon Apple Hand Pies

In Jessica's honor, I'm throwing her a virtual bridal shower with some of her closest blogging friends and bloggers who have inspired her since her first days of writing and photographing.  My recipe contribution to the shower is a dessert that I think fits Jessica well.  I can't help but think that Jessica is going to be that perfect wife who has a pie all baked and ready for her husband or any guests that unexpectedly come over that night.  Residing in Texas, she's such an all-American southern gal, that these apple hand pies seemed to fit the bill.

Please check out the other fabulous bloggers who contributed to Jessica's shower by clicking over to their sites below.  You don't want to miss the great food!!

Congratulations, Jessica and Chris!  Marriage is hard, but it is FUN.  Enjoy!!

Fried Cinnamon Apple Hand Pies

These miniature hand pies feature a short cut by using wonton wrappers as the crust. Quickly fry, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar topping and serve warm.
Prep Time45 minutes mins
Cook Time25 minutes mins
Total Time1 hour hr 10 minutes mins
Servings: 12 servings
Author: Nikki Gladd

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples , peeled and diced very small (I prefer Honeycrisp, but use what you like)
  • 3 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon flour
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • Vegetable oil
  • 20 to 24 round wonton wrappers

For the cinnamon sugar topping:

  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Place the diced apples in a medium saucepan. In a small bowl, combine the 3 Tablespoons sugar, flour, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle over the apples and toss with a spoon.
  • Heat the apples over medium heat until just starting to soften but still with a bite, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside to slightly cool.
  • Meanwhile, pour a ½-inch layer of vegetable oil into a frying pan. Heat over medium heat until hot and ready for frying. A good test is to sprinkle water into the pan with your hand. If it sizzles right away, it's ready.
  • While the oil is heating up to the right temperature, prepare the pies. Working in batches, place just under a Tablespoon of the apple pie filling into the center of each wonton. Brush water around the edges of the wonton and fold over to seal.
  • Pinch the seams to create the fluted edges.
  • Fry in the pan for about 10-15 seconds on each side. Drain on a paper towel lined plate.
  • Combine the remaining 2 Tablespoons sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle evenly over the pies, serve immediately.

Yum! I have been wanting to fry something ever since the TX state fair started. 🙂 All I can think of lately in relation to sweets is--fried.

Do you usually just fry with oil on the stove top rather than a deep fryer? I am looking for a new, small deep fryer that's simple and easy to clean. I never seem to get the temp right on the stove . . .

This is a really lovely "shower," Nikki!

Hey Amber. I've never owned a deep-fryer and don't really want to because I think I would gain too many lbs wanting to fry everything! 😉 So, yes, I just "flash fry" instead on the stove top. Less oil, less mess, less calories (but probably not much less). haha!

It would never occur to me that you could fry it like that. Love it!

I love these Nikki! I had some Apple Pie ice cream in Idaho and that's all I've been thinking about since I returned home, so I know I'd devour these if we were lucky enough to party in person! Thank you so much, dear friend, for the work you put into this virtual shower... it means the world to me. And YES, we will be getting together very soon. Six hours is nothing! 🙂

Nikki, these are adorable!! I don't even like cooked apples and I'd like to grab a handful of these. I think you sold me with the cinnamon sugar topping! 🙂

Thanks for putting together this virtual shower! So happy I could be a part of it!

    These are seriously perfection..

Would dipping them in caramel sauce be overkill?

    Don't answer that.

Answering anyway. NOT overkill, but what's the word for more than perfection? 😉

    Good Morning Nikki!

Thanks again for all your hard work putting this special event together... I had so much fun taking part, and as a bonus, I hope I get to make another fantastic food blogger friend 🙂

Your fried apple hand pies are ADORABLE and SO clever! What an inventive use for a wonton wrapper- those things seem endlessly useful. I recently baked up a batch hand pies after apple picking, and while delicious, the pate brisee dough was super finicky and labor intensive with numerous rounds of chilling. I've got to give your variation a try... what a perfect use for those last apples I have leftover!

Thank you for stopping by my site, and leaving such a nice comment. I look forward to frequenting Pennies On A Platter in the future and I hope to hear from you again soon!

    Fondly,
    Joy
