Making a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte at home allows you to control the ingredients and customize to your taste.  Plus, it's a cost-effective way to enjoy this beloved seasonal beverage whenever you like! There's no need for an expensive espresso machine, as it can be made with a strong cup of coffee instead of shots espresso.

Pumpkin Spice Syrup

The heart of the brew is our homemade pumpkin spice syrup. You can't have a homemade pumpkin spice latte recipe without pumpkin spice syrup. This syrup is the key ingredient that transforms a regular latte into a cozy, spiced masterpiece.

Sure, you can find store-bought syrup that will work, but homemade pumpkin spice syrup trumps store-bought, infusing PSLs with real pumpkin and authentic, rich flavors.

  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks (or you can use ground cinnamon)

Instructions for Pumpkin Spice Syrup:

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  2. Whisk in the pumpkin puree, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Add the cinnamon sticks. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once the syrup reaches a smooth consistency, remove it from heat and let it cool. Strain the syrup to remove any bits of spice, leaving you with a velvety pumpkin elixir.

With our pumpkin spice syrup in hand, let's dive into crafting the perfect pumpkin spice latte. Here's what you need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee or 2 shots of espresso
  • 1 cup milk (dairy-free works, too)
  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin spice syrup
  • Whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Brew a robust cup of coffee or pull two shots of espresso. Pour it into your favorite mug.
  2. In a separate pot, heat the milk until it's warm but not boiling. If you have a milk frother, froth the milk for that delightful latte foam.
  3. Pour the milk mixture over the brewed coffee or espresso.
  4. Stir in 2 tablespoons of our homemade pumpkin spice syrup. Adjust the sweetness to your liking.
  5. Top your latte with a dollop of whipped cream and a pinch of cinnamon for that extra touch of indulgence.

While the traditional way to enjoy a PSL as a hot drink, many love it over ice as a cold drink and topped with a sweet foam. We love it both ways, but make sure to pair it with a freshly baked scone or muffin to elevate the cozy experience!

Another variation may be to blend coffee and ice together for a frozen blend drink. You may want to add a little more sweetener as the ice can water down the pumpkin flavor.
