Italian Pizzelle Ice Cream Sandwiches

Italian Pizzelle Ice Cream Sandwiches

Last week we had dinner at a friends’ home.  I was in charge of bringing dessert.  Since the meal was a classic Italian dish, Chicken Cacciatore, I wanted to make a dessert that fit the “theme.”  I had this recipe bookmarked on Tastespotting for quite some time and knew this was the perfect opportunity to get out my pizzelle press on a date other than Christmas.

The recipe comes from The Italian Dish.  I made one change and decided to top it with a drizzle of simple chocolate ganache.  I’ll do this every time because I think it really added a wonderful richness to the taste.

Nutella

Have you ever tried Nutella?  If not, go get yourself some of this delicious chocolaty hazelnut treat! To assemble the ice cream sandwich, spread a layer of this on the bottom pizzelle and you won’t be sorry.  Take the ice cream out of the carton and cut a slice off and place on top of the Nutella, then top with another pizzelle.  Drizzle with the ganache and serve immediately. No one will be able to wait anyway!  Yummmm!

Ice Cream Slice

Since I needed to serve four couples, I picked up three different pints of ice cream that were on sale.  One of them, luckily, was Starbucks’ coffee ice cream.  Delicious!  I think the coffee ice cream was a perfect combination with the Nutella and chocolate ganache.  The other two flavors I used were a Mocha Frappaccino and, as you can see from the photo, Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked.

Everyone loved this dessert.  In fact, I remember the gals saying “this tastes like heaven!” I can’t wait to dazzle more people again with this delectable delight!

Printable Recipe

8 Pizzelles
Nutella
3 pints of your choice of ice cream (I recommend coffee flavor)
Chocolate Ganache

Spread a layer of Nutella on a pizzelle.  Take choice of ice cream out of the carton and slice off a piece about 1.5″ thick. Place on top of Nutella and top with another pizzelle.  Drizzle ganache over the sandwich and serve immediately.

I’m reading in the office and my mouth is watering. How can I somehow get out of my 1pm meeting and to an icecream parlor? 🙂
