Because they’re a classic, easy to make recipe that kids and adults BOTH love. During football season we call these “Pigskins in a Blanket” for a fun tailgating snack!
Have you been making these for years and years like me? Never did I think to post it here to my recipe site, but just the other day a friend texted me asking how to make them. It was then I realized I should take a photo and publish the steps I take to throw these together.
Pigs in a Blanket Ingredients
You only need 2 ingredients for this easy pigs in a blanket recipe. Here’s what you need:
- Cocktail sausages – You might call them cocktail franks or little smokies. I like the beef sausage smokies but you can use your favorite. They typically come in a package of around 42 mini sausages. I usually need to open two packages.
- Refrigerated crescent rolls – Get two tubs of 8 crescent rolls, not the full sheet dough that is now also on shelves. You’ll see below how I cute the crescent rolls to make this cocktail sausage recipe easy peasy. If you buy the full sheet, it will still work, just not as simple.
How to Make Crescent Roll Pigs in a Blanket
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- I typically use two tubs of refrigerated crescent rolls and slice each crescent roll triangle into thirds. This gives you 48 slices of dough to roll around 48 cocktail sausages.
- I also buy two packages of sausages in order to have enough for 48 and usually have some left over. Wrap each sausage with one-third of a crescent triangle (one slice) and place onto a baking sheet seam side down.
- Bake crescent dogs for 15 minutes until crescent dough is cooked through and golden brown.

What can I make with pigs in a blanket? Honestly, anything! We eat these for birthday parties, football parties, Christmas parties, church parties, neighborhood parties — the list could go on and on! We’ve even had them for breakfast! Most recently, we served them at our fantasy football draft get-together with my football cookies.
Can you wrap pigs in a blanket the night before? Yes! BUT, do not wrap them more than the night before because you risk the dough from drying out. Make sure you cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate them until they’re ready for baking. I also recommend transferring them to a different baking pan and not baking them on the cold one or you risk uneven baking.
Can I pre-cook pigs in a blanket? I do not recommend it, because it is so easy to cook them the day you need them. But, yes, you can pre-cook them and reheat for later. We do this with our leftovers. Just store them in the fridge and reheat them in the microwave or oven. We use the microwave for small batches and the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes for large batches.
Why is it called Pigs in a Blanket? You can probably answer this one for me. Those little sausages (typically made from pork) represent the piggies and the crescent dough, or biscuit, is the blanket wrapped about the piggies.
What sauce goes with pigs in a blanket? Y’all, I definitely suggest trying my copycat Zaxby’s sauce for dipping these crescent dogs. But, a honey mustard sauce is great with these, too. Or, simply, ketchup.
Tips and Tricks
- Make more! These crescent roll pigs in a blankets disappear quickly, especially on game day. Definitely double or triple the recipe and bake more for a really large crowd. It’s easy to make more or less as you need.
- Use a large baking sheet. You can fit a ton at once on a large baking sheet (I use my favorite big sheet pan lined with a silicone mat) to entertain a large amount of guests. Leftovers store well in the fridge to quickly reheat the next day or two for lunch.
- Add cheese. Like a cheesy crescent dog? Go ahead an roll a small slice of American cheese into the center with the cocktail sausage. Baking time will be the same.

2- Ingredient Pigs in a Blanket
- 2 8-oz cans refrigerated crescent rolls
- 48 cocktail sausages
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Open cans of crescent dough and separate into 16 triangles (as perforated in the dough) onto a cutting board.
- Slice each crescent triangle lengthwise into thirds. Place one sausage onto the wider side of triangle and roll up to the thinner side. Place on large baking sheet seam side down. Repeat with remaining sausages.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until dough is baked through and golden brown.
