Summer is right around the corner and I think the entire country is finally warmed up from a very long winter. Mississippi is definitely hot already, but not yet unbearable. I know it's coming, though - the heat that keeps you indoors all summer or at the pool every day.
Our neighborhood pool recently closed its doors (great timing, sheesh) and is in limbo right now on who will take it over and what will happen with it. So, it could be a long summer for us. Fortunately, there are other things we can do to keep cool...like sprinklers in the backyard, water balloons, the splash pad at the outdoor mall just down the road, etc. etc.
About two weeks ago, I found out about another idea to cool us off this summer. A local Jackson, Mississippi candy store, Nandy's Candy, not only offers homemade chocolates and other sweets, but also has a seasonal stand for their homemade Snoballs! I took Judah and Simon to check this place out and was very excited about the variety of fun flavors offered!
There are quite a few places that offer snow ball type treats in Mississippi, and I've tried a few of them. They are all refreshing and good, but there is something about a Nandy's Candy's Snoball that sets them above the rest.
Judah wanted the Captain America, which was a red (strawberry), white (wedding cake) and blue (bubblegum) mix. I ordered the "Olaf" because I couldn't resist trying the marshmallow flavored ice. Now I can't imagine liking a Snoball more than the Olaf! The blue was cotton candy flavored, and the white was the marshmallow. Totally wonderful!
The price is right at Nandy's Candy. I believe it was just $2.00 for the small which was actually a pretty large (perfectly sized) cup! The smooth and fluffy shaved ice was the perfect New Orleans consistency and there are SO MANY flavors to please ANY palate.
Nandy's Candy Snoball Stand is right off the Interstate 55. So even if you do not live in the area and are traveling maybe to the gulf shore beaches or NOLA, I definitely recommend stopping off the Northside Drive exit for a refreshing break of a Nandy's Candy Snoball. There is also a Starbucks and a Whole Foods Market at this exit, right next to Nandy's Candy if you're looking for some caffeine or lunch, too.
Just make sure you get a Snoball before October when they close for the season. 😉
