This DIY Homemade Taco Seasoning is easy and eliminates any mystery ingredients you might find in a taco seasoning packet!  Use it to spice up your beef or chicken in your favorite Mexican recipes!

teaspoon of homemade taco seasoningSometimes I like to know what is actually in my food and not leave it up to mystery store ingredients, but it's not easy or convenient to make everything from scratch.  I try to find simple ways to incorporate this into my life and this taco seasoning is one of them.

Using pantry staples, you can mix together a few Mexican spices to create your own homemade taco seasoning.  It's really very easy!  Store it in a small jar so it's ready to quickly spice up your food!

Jar of homemade taco seasoning

Ingredients To Make Homemade Taco Seasoning:

  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 3 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1-2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Combine all these spices in a jar, shake it up, and you've got your own DIY homemade taco seasoning!  Double it for a bigger batch if you want!

How to Use Homemade Taco Seasoning

Once you make this DIY taco seasoning, you'll have exactly the spice you need for your favorite Mexican dishes.  You can use it in my favorite Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos recipe as well as in my big batch of Ground Beef Taco Meat.  Flavor a taco salad with this taco seasoning or use for fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, etc.

A teaspoon of homemade taco seasoningTIP:  2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning is equivalent to 1 packet of store-bought taco seasoning.  You will want to use about 2 tablespoons per 1 lb of meat.  Add a little moisture like water or broth when cooking.

You can also use this taco seasoning to spice up some of those spicy cracker snacks.  You know what I'm talking about?  Those delicious firecracker saltines!
