- Remove from the oven and use rubber spatula to spread melted chocolate in an even layer. Optional: Sprinkle with desired topping (sprinkles, M&M's, crushed peppermints, etc.)

I made this twice. The sugar and butter separated both times when I stopped stirring. Needless to say, not a nice toffee topping. Not sure what went awry?

Hi Karen, I'm sorry you had an issue with the butter and sugar separating. There are many various reasons this can happen. First, make sure the sugar is fully dissolved before turning up the heat to medium-high. The mixture should come to a gentle boil, not a roaring boil on high heat. Heavy-bottom saucepans work best in this recipe, a thin pan can heat unevenly. Are you using real butter, and not margarine or a butter substitute? European butters can also react differently. Hope these tips help!

I made this delicious dish last night for a mom’s group Christmas party, and it was a resounding success! Several moms even approached me to ask for the recipe, which I happily shared with them. I truly appreciate this fantastic recipe. However, I have a question. Do you ever double the recipe for larger gatherings? If so, which baking dish should I use—a 9x13 inch pan or a cookie sheet?
Nikki Gladd says
I'm so glad all the moms loved this recipe! I have not doubled it, but if I did, I would try it in a 9x13. I have a similar recipe that makes a larger batch using a large rimmed baking sheet, but with white chocolate. https://www.seededatthetable.com/king-cake-cracker-candy/ In fact, I make the cracker candy even more often than this christmas crack recipe. It's so easy to switch out the colors for any occasion! 🙂
